Not I is a short dramatic monologue written in 1972 (March 20th to April 1st) by Samuel Beckett, translated as Pas Moi.  The piece premiered at the “Samuel Beckett Festival” by the Repertory Theater of Lincoln Center, New York (22 November 1972), directed by Alan Schneider, with Jessica Tandy (Mouth) and Henderson Forsythe (Auditor).

Marking the 40th anniversary year since the play received its European premiere at the Royal Court Theatre  (January 16th, 1973) with Billie Whitelaw playing Mouth, the new recording will be performed by actress Lisa Dwan and will form part of an  hour-long documentary ‘Samuel Beckett: Not I’.

Not I is scheduled to be broadcast on Wednesday July 31st at 9.30pm on Sky Arts 2 HD.

The documentary, will cover the history of Beckett’s short one-woman piece and take a look at the importance of his work and various productions of it.

Lisa Dwan’s original performance in May of this year marked 40 years since The Royal Court Theatre first held the UK premiere of the monologue. Her performance received rave reviews including five stars from The Guardian which described it as “an extraordinary experience” and “completely immersive.”  The Financial Times agreed calling it “hypnotic” and The Daily Telegraph added that “Dwan’s is a dazzling technical performance.”
