Filmed on five continents and in twelve countries, this feature length documentary explores the global impact of one of the world’s greatest works of art, Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony. The Ninth was played at Tiananmen Square by protesting students when the tanks were rolling in to crush them. In Japan the Ninth (Daiku) is performed over 200 times each December, often with a chorus of five or ten thousand singers. In Chile the Ninth was sung in the streets and over the walls of torture prisons during the Pinochet years. And Billy Bragg has now written a new English version of the “Ode To Joy” for our time. The Beethoven Billy Bragg Ninth was performed before the Queen by the London Philharmonic. A world journey into the power of great music to heal and change us.
